Neolamprologus Ventralis "Tembwe"

Neolamprologus Ventralis is a rock dweller from Lake Tanganyika, East Africa. Both male and female have very pretty pastel shades; the body is somewhat beige/pink, the fins are shades of oranges (the dorsal fin) and bluish with white spot, they have blue eyes. The pelvic fin is very developed its length reaches 3 to 4 cm.

The size of N. Ventralis is 7-8 cm, but they might already be sexually mature at 4-5 cm. The male are slightly taller than the female.

Not much information is found one this species since they are still rare. In the Lake they are known from Kigoma in Tanzania, from Magara in Burundi and Tembwe on the Congolese shore, they have not yet been seen in Zambian waters. They have been found in deep water along rocky shores. They occur from 30-50 metres, and are most often seen solitary.

N. Ventralis may be an old species (Konings 1998) that lack the competitive aggression experienced by other rock-dwellers trying to secure territories in shallower parts of the rocky habitat.

N.Ventralis are cave breeders that mean they will when a pair has formed take up residence among the rocks, were the spawning takes place in a cave; the spawns are rather small, usually numbering less than 20 eggs.

I feed mine a combination of frozen brine shrimp, Cyclop-eeze, Spirulina flakes, ect… they are not picky eaters.
